Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

The Syrians before, and the Philistines behind; and they shall devour Israel with open mouth. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

For wickedness burneth as the fire: it shall devour the briers and thorns, and shall kindle in the thickets of the forest, and they shall mount up like the lifting up of smoke.

Iz 9,1 - Na spomenuté kraje vo vojnových hrôzach smrť naozaj vrhla svoj tieň.
Iz 9,2 - Dnešný porušený hebrejský text a za ním aj Vulg číta: "Rozmnožil si národ, nezväčšil si radosť." Ak by toto znenie bolo správne, zmysel by bol: Kedysi bol národ veľký, ale nemal mnoho radosti.
Iz 9,3 - O premožení Madiánčanov pozri Sdc 7 n.
Iz 9,4 - Hrmotná obuv a šat zmáčaný krvou patria k vojenskému výstroju.
Iz 9,5 - Chlapček, ktorý donesie svetu toľkú radosť, je Emanuel, Mesiáš (porov. Lk 2,10–11). Názvy, ktoré sa mu tu dávajú, dokazujú, že nebude obyčajným človekom, ba že bude Bohom. Pravda, v Starom zákone ani samému prorokovi nebol jasný celý dosah názvu "mocný Boh". Izaiáš vedel len toľko, že v Dieťati-Mesiášovi sa akýmsi neobyčajným spôsobom zjaví Boh. Ako väčšina proroctiev i toto sa stalo celkom jasným len po splnení. My, ktorým už bolo zjavené tajomstvo Najsvätejšej Trojice, vieme, že Emanuel je druhá božská osoba. Kráľovstvo, ktoré založí, bude len pokračovaním starozákonnej bohovlády, ale bude mať večné trvanie.
Iz 9,8 - Samária bola hlavné mesto Severnej ríše izraelskej, ktorá sa často volala aj Efraim, pretože kmeň Efraim hral v nej vedúci zástoj.
Iz 9,10 - Nepriatelia Rasinovi boli Asýri a iné okolité národy.
Iz 9,13 - Výrazy: "hlava a chvost", "palmová ratolesť a trsť" označujú obyčajne to, čo je "vznešené a podlé", "vysoké a nízke". Teda: vodcov národa a pospolitý ľud (porov. Dt 28,13.44; Iz 19,15). Tu však dáva prorok výrazu "hlava a chvost" od obvyklého trochu odchylný význam.
Iz 9,17 - Rozumej: Nešťastie zachváti najprv rúhačov, pohanov (tŕne), potom bude ničiť bez vyberania.
Iz 9,19 - "Mäso vlastného ramena" zjedá človek v občianskej vojne, keď ničí tých, čo sú mu najbližší. Takéto vojny boli časté v severnej ríši, ku ktorej patrili aj bratské kmene Efraima a Manassesa.
