1 Jon 2, 1 Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish's belly, 2 Jon 2, 2 "And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and you heard my voice. " 3 Jon 2, 3 "For you had cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all your billows and your waves passed over me. " 4 Jon 2, 4 "Then I said, I am cast out of your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple. " 5 Jon 2, 5 The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head. 6 Jon 2, 6 "I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet have you brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God. " 7 Jon 2, 7 When my soul fainted within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in unto you, into your holy temple. 8 Jon 2, 8 They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy. 9 Jon 2, 9 "But I will sacrifice unto you with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD. " 10 Jon 2, 10 And the LORD spoke unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.

Ž 42:7 - Deep calls unto deep at the noise of your waterspouts: all your waves and your billows are gone over me.
Jon 2,1 - Dávnejšie sa domnievali, že to bola veľryba. Keďže však veľryba má veľmi úzky hltan, novšie sa nazdávajú, že Jonáša prehltol žralok, ktorý je v Stredozemnom mori častý. – Isteže bola záchrana Jonášova veľkým zázrakom. Kto však myslí na Božiu všemohúcnosť a pripustí možnosť zázrakov, nepozastaví sa ani nad týmto, najmä, keď uváži, že tento zázrak mal byť predobrazom ešte väčšieho: zmŕtvychvstania Ježiša Krista, porov. Mt 12,40.
Jon 2,5 - Jonáš vidí, že Boh zaobchádza s ním zázračne, preto sa utešuje nádejou, že ešte uvidí Pánov chrám, od ktorého utekal.
Jon 2,6-8 - Úpätia vrchov sú dolu, v mori. Prorok cítil, že mu vody vyhasia život, už ho obklopovali morské rastliny, nazdal sa, že sa na zem nikdy viac nedostane, že sú "závory zeme za ním" zavreté. Ale vtedy Pán vyslyšal jeho modlitbu a zachránil ho.
Jon 2,9 - Lživé tiene sú modly. Tí, čo sa klaňajú modlám, zriekajú sa Božieho milosrdenstva.
